It’s Friday, Ya Bastards!
WEEK IN REVIEW:
IT’S TORTURE MR. MUKASEY!
Bush is basically saying it’s my way or the highway. Bush is willing to leave the AG position vacant if Mukasey is not approved! Yesterday, Bush aggressively defended Mukasey.
Many Senate Judiciary Democrats have said that they will not vote Mukasey in as AG. But if even one Democrat votes to confirm, his nomination goes to the Full Senate and that's the ballgame!
Dana Perino, in a press briefing yesterday, basically said that we should confirm Mukasey now and ask him questions about waterboarding later.
Patrick Leahy, Dick Durbin, Sheldon Whitehouse and Ted Kennedy all announced that they would join Joseph Biden in voting against Mukasey.
FLASHBACK: In August, Sen. Kennedy introduced a Torture Prevention and Interrogation Act. Then in October Kennedy wrote a piece entitled We Must Ban Secretive US Torture.
FASCISM!
Imagine ONE media conglomerate being allowed to own the daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, television and radio stations and primary Internet news sites in your community.
TONIGHT ON BILL MOYERS JOURNAL: The hour is devoted to MEDIA OWNERSHIP. Senator Byron Dorgan is part of the discussion. He's FIERCE on media deregulation.
A Book from 1920, written by Walter Lippmann, is being re-released to sound the alarm on Media Ownership and lying in the Media.
Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson wrote a letter calling for impeachment, saying that the Bush administration, as well as Congress, have led the US to the brink of fascism. He is asking Americans to fight the insanity.
WAR ON TERROR:
There is no evidence that Iran is actively working on a nuclear material that can readily be used in a weapon…this from the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei.
Forced duty in Iraq for US diplomats next summer is drawing a lot of resistance. 250 officers were sent emails telling them if not enough volunteered they would be ordered to serve. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) urged the president to fire any State Department personnel who refuse to go to Iraq.
FRED PHELPS' WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH is being ordered to pay $10.9 million dollars in damages to a Marines family after showing up at Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyders funeral with signs that said "You're Going to Hell and "God Hates You". Constitutional scholars are saying the award won’t stand due to the 1st amendment.
Troops have had it with being the BOUNCER in the middle of the BAR BRAWL. Civil War ain't no place for us to be!
Hillary Clinton, along with 29 other Democratic Senators, have signed a letter to Bush that expressed a serious concern about the strategy to stop Iran from making a nuclear weapon. Obama did not sign the letter choosing instead to introduce legislation to prohibit bush from attacking Iran without congressional authority.
A DIARY OF IRAQ: ONE SOLDIERS VIEW:
Gen. Petraeus’ spokesman Col. Steven A. Boylan wrote Salon contributor Glenn Greenwald an unsolicited nasty email about his articles. Boylan has a habit of sending such emails.
Here is the "Shock Troops" article that started the entire controversy.
After the article appeared, Scott Beauchamp made a statement in The New Republic saying he stands by his comments.
The New Republic added that they did their research into the validity of the accounts.
The New Republic followed that up with a re-report of the story and in doing so spoke with 5 soldiers in Beauchamps company who substantiated the events.
Matt Drudge was given Army documents to discredit Beauchamp. He posted portions of them and then quickly took them down.
Here is the transcript of a Defense Department Bloggers Roundtable. As noted on page 7, Colonel Gibbs was handed a note saying that Beauchamp did not officially recant his comments and is standing by his story.
THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION:
Unwilling to compromise with Congress on legislation, George Bush is increasingly turning to administrative orders to get his way.
Donald Rumsfeld’s “snowflake” memos to his staff instructed his staff to link IRAQ to IRAN, use "bumper sticker statements" retaliated against reporters who wrote unfavorably about the occupation of Iraq and commented that Muslims are lazy. "Too often Muslims are against physical labor, so they bring in Koreans and Pakistanis while their young people remain unemployed.”
The White House said that Rummy’s views are not in line with the president’s views.
Speaking of Rummy, while in Paris last Friday, was the subject of a criminal complaint charging him with torture.
BLACKWATER:
Iraq has revoked immunity for contractors. That means they fall under Iraqi Law now.
It was reported that State Department investigators offered immunity to the Blackwater guards involved in the Sept. 16th shootings. One minor snag is that they don’t have the authority to do that.
There are new allegations against Blackwater. Federal agents are now investigating whether Blackwater exported illegal “silencers” into Iraq and other countries. SWR Manufacturing told NBC News that Blackwater did in fact purchase silencers from them.
SCHIP:
A revised version of the SCHIP bill cleared the Senate yesterday. Bush has said he will veto this version as well.
PAYING AT THE PUMP:
$3 a gallon for gas is very possible before the end of the year. Some think $4 a gallon is a possibility.
Oil hit $96 dollars a barrel on Wednesday.
THE ’08 CANDIDATES:
Steven Colbert's request and application to be on the South Carolina ballot has been denied.
The Evangelical vote is still up for grabs. A poll by the Pew Research Center found that Giuliani, McCain and Thompson each drew about 20% of the vote.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which is 1.4 million members strong, threw its support behind Hillary.
Joe Biden took a nice shot at Giuliani on Tuesday night. He said Giuliani only mentions 3 things in any sentence: a noun, a verb, and 9/11.
CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES:
A boy playing with matches admits to starting one of the California wildfires.
One heck of a con job: FEMA totally faked a press conference on the California fires last week. All of the “questions” were asked by FEMA employees posing as reporters. Here is the CNN report of the fake FEMA press conference.
SIDEBARS:
Andrew “Don’t Taze Me Bro” Meyers appeared on the Today Show and said he didn’t intend to make a scene and apologized for his actions at a John Kerry Q&A last month.
Yet another Republican sex scandal! This time Washington State Representative Richard Curtis had sex with a man he met while Curtis was dressed in women’s lingerie in an adult video store. Curtis says the man blackmailed him. The man claims they had arranged a price for the sex and that Curtis, ahem, stiffed him.

Great headlines from Randi's site!
From MikeMalloy.com by Kathy!
How will it end, if it ever ends?
Yesterday both Cheney and Bush spoke to their respective minions about the endless war on terror, trying yet again to terrify the public into accepting bloodshed and violence for the sake of liberty and freedom. That logic escapes me.
A recent article by Brian Turner in the New York Times, titled "Requiem for the Last American Soldier to Die in Iraq," put it this way: "Who can say where that last soldier is now, at this very moment? . . . Could that last soldier be in front of a video camera in Hollister right now, recording a final message in case she doesn’t make it back, making a videotape for a child who will never know its own mother? What will the name be? Anthony. Lynette. Fernando. Paula. Joshua. Letitia. Roger… Who will carve it in stone and who will leave flowers there as the years pass by? Who will remember this soldier and what will those memories be? Does he have brothers and sisters? Will his father sink into the grass in the backyard when he is told the news? Will his mother stare into the street with eyes gone hollow and vacant, the cars passing each day with their polished enamel reflecting the sunlight? What will the officer say when he knocks on that door?"
How do the members of the Bush Crime Family sleep at night, knowing their children and loved ones are safe and cozy while they send others to kill and die for an illegal war that nobody wants or believes in, other than their war-profiteering cronies and oil company barons?
We'll talk about this and the other news of the week on the program tonight.

TWO great headline/articles from Buzzflash!
Bush Goes to Bat for Another "Torture Boy" AG, Using Inane Lies and Deceptions to Justify Mukasey as Transitional DOJ Puppet to a Giuliani Administration. (Mukasey is a Big Bud of Giuliani.) Bush Thinks That We Are Stupid Enough to Believe That Al-Qaeda Would Not Commit a Terrorist Act Because They Don't Know How They Would be Tortured. Explain That to a Suicide Bomber, You Moron.
Sen. Leahy says will oppose Mukasey nomination. Will Feinstein aid the Busheviks So Her Husband Keeps Getting Contracts? Will Schumer Stand Up for the Constitution and Decency? Stay Tuned.

A 6-member independent panel is criticizing the Army for sending inexperienced untrained contractors to war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan.
Rice & Gates have agreed on a measure that will make security companies in Iraq fall under military control…BUT NOT LAW.
SCHIP:
Now the White House is citing the tobacco tax for the first time as a major reason the SCHIP bill would draw a veto from Bush. Senators say that Bush keeps moving the goal posts on the issue.
THE ’08 CANDIDATES:
The Evangelical vote is still up for grabs. A poll by the Pew Research Center found that Giuliani, McCain and Thompson each drew about 20% of the vote.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which is 1.4 million members strong, threw its support behind Hillary yesterday.

In a new Zogby poll, Hillary has a 14% point lead over Obama.
THE WILDFIRES:
A boy playing with matches admits to starting one of the California wildfires.
IT’S TORTURE:
AG nominee Mukasay has 2 more opponents. Dick Durbin and Sheldon Whitehouse announced that they would join Joseph Biden on voting against Mukasay. Here is the video of Sheldon Whitehouse saying he will oppose Mukasay.
White House adviser Ed Gillespie was trying to defend Mukasay on the waterboarding issue saying that “we don’t know that it’s used by the government. That’s never been confirmed by the U.S. government.”
But Gillespie was lying. The CIA confirmed they water boarded Khalid Sheik Mohammed.
Here's Mukasey's letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee. On page 4 he says he doesn't know if waterboarding was done because it's classified?
WIRETAPPING:
Leahy and other key Senators are showing serious concern about plans for legal immunity for telecoms that participated in eavesdropping after 9/11.
SIDEBARS:
Andrew “Don’t Taze Me Bro” Meyers appeared on the Today Show and said he didn’t intend to make a scene and apologized for his actions at a John Kerry Q&A last month.

WEEK IN REVIEW:
WAR ON TERROR:
Terror Watch! The government’s terror watch list is 860,000 names long. Can you imagine what telemarketers would pay for that? We’re All Terrorists! There were 20,000 matches of travelers with the terror watch list in 2006!
The FBI and Homeland Security officials are warning again that modified footwear is being used to conceal bombs.
Family Security Matters has the 10 Most Dangerous Organizations in America. Think Progress, Media Matters, and Moveon.org all make the list, but al-Qaeda does not. Haven’t these people heard who started the wildfires?
Some Presidential candidates are now worried that Bush is getting ready to go to war with Iran. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, said that the option of blockade or bombardment should be left on the table.
Not to worry though: Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that planning for an Iran strike is just “routine”.
Bush asked Congress to approve $196 billion dollars to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Democrats say the request was timed to avoid embarrassing comparisons to Bush’s veto of children’s health insurance. Speaker Pelosi released this statement after Bush asked Congress for more war cash.
Yesterday, the US UNILATERALLY imposed sanctions on Iran's MILITARY! Russia, China, France and England will not be joining us, neither will the United Nations.
Sen. Hagel said "Unilateral sanctions rarely work" and Putin said this could bring talks to a dead end. ''It's not the best way to resolve the situation by running around like a madman with a razor blade in his hand".
If war with Iran did take place, oil experts are saying that it would result in dire consequences and “hell would break loose in the oil markets”.
WHERE'S OSAMA? IN TORA BORA
According to Col. David Hunt, who wrote this, the US had Osama bin Laden in their sights in August of 2007 and did not kill him.
RUMMY:
Donald Rumsfeld, while in Paris today, was slapped with a criminal complaint charging him with torture!
CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES:
Firefighters seem to be gaining the upper hand in the wildfires. Then a massive clean-up and recovery operation begins. At least 12 people have been found dead.
Back in June, a GAO report said that the U.S. Forest Service and Department of Agriculture failed to accomplish the "fundamental step" of planning out what assets and resources were needed to prepare for approaching fire seasons.
The Santiago Fire, which has scorched more than 22,000 acres, is being confirmed as ARSON!
San Diego County has losses that top $1 billion dollars, with some of the largest fires still burning out of control. A $70,000 reward has been posted for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible for setting the Santiago fires.
Though firefighters are gaining some control over the fires, questions are being raised about equipment and coordination.
The California National Guard said that equipment shortages, caused in part by the war in Iraq, could slow the guard’s response if a major disaster struck, like a fire.
Fox news had said earlier in the week that AL QAEDA may have started the wildfires in California. It was actually a faulty reference to An FBI memo from back in 2003.
S-CHIP:
The House passed a new version of the S-CHIP bill by a vote of 265-142, short of a veto-proof majority. And of course Bush is vowing to veto this bill if it reaches his desk.
PRIVATE SECURITY:
Condi Rice ordered measures for private security guards in Iraq including improved training and better rules of engagement and, of course, sensitivity training. Let’s get them at least sensitive enough to stop shooting people.
Seems as though Blackwater may have engaged in tax evasion. A Blackwater spokesperson released a statement saying that Henry Waxman's contention is "incorrect".
Sen. Kerry wants to know if the Bush administration had any part in possible tax evasion by Blackwater. Kerry sent a letter to the Small Business Administration asking them if they played any role in helping Blackwater avoid paying almost 32 million in taxes.
The State Department pays private security contractors $4 billion a year.
Is US border patrol up next for Blackwater?
WIRETAPPING:
Presidential hopeful Chris Dodd posted a video on ChrisDodd.com about his plans to try and derail the new FISA bill if it includes retroactive immunity for telecom companies.
Groundswell: Barack Obama and Joe Biden have joined Chris Dodd in vowing to kill the wiretapping bill if it includes immunity for the big telecom companies.
The White House is finally considering showing their secret NSA documents to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The House Intelligence Committee and the House Judiciary Committee have not seen the documents and WON'T unless they include IMMUNITY for telecoms in THEIR LEGISLATION. Quid pro quo? You decide.
THE ’08 CANDIDATES:
Happy 60th B-Day Hillary. Elvis Costello sang “Happy Birthday Mrs. President” to Hillary last night at her $1 million par-tay!
Here is some video of the event.
The mob reportedly considered whacking Giuliani back in 1986. Here is the CNN report.
Giuliani was asked if waterboarding is torture. He said he wasn’t sure. It depends on who is doing it.
Wayne Barrett – Village Voice got copies of Rudy's testimony before the 9/11 commission. Rudy didn't know who Osama bin Laden was prior to 9/11, didn't know what al Qaeda was until after 9/11 and blames his lack of interest/knowledge on the FBI.
Fred Thompson says that the Iraqi insurgency is a bunch of kids with IED’s. Watch the video.
VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY? YES IT WAS…AND LED BY A WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION GOP HYPOCRITE!!!
Richard Mellon Scaife, who funded "The Arkansas Project" in order to HUNT BILL CLINTON, is in the middle of his SECOND divorce. Apparently his wife caught him in a $40 Motel room with a woman who had been arrested previously for PROSTITUTION. Background or Refresher Course for those of us who remember the 90's.
SIDEBARS:
Oil Company BP has agreed to pay $373 million in fines after admitting to criminal activities in a fatal Texas explosion, an oil spill in Alaska and illegal propane trading.
Bill Maher had to throw some loud and disruptive 9/11 conspiracy theorists from the audience on his live-broadcast HBO show. (NOTE: This video uses profanity)
If you are going to be in Dutchess County this weekend, take cover, Dick Cheney is going hunting.
Have you ever gone into a candy store or grocery store and ate some grapes or grabbed a handful of jellybeans before paying? A guy was arrested the other day for doing just that.
Condi went as far as saying that the US mishandled the case of Maher Arar, a Canadian who was arrested, deported and tortured…but she stopped short of an actual apology.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
From MikeMalloy.com by Kathy
Man-or-Monkey toured the fire damaged San Diego area today. Sleeves rolled up, appropriate serious expression on his face, ready for his fly-boy arial tour of the devastation. Looks like his handlers did their job coaching him on how to appear appropriately concerned during a national crisis. I guess they also provided a detailed map, showing that California is, indeed, a part of the United States.
Too bad they couldn't also nab some No Doze for Cheney. Apparently, the bionic VEEP is bored by domestic death and destruction, having devoted so much of his evil energy to the carnage he orchestrated in the Mid East. According to CNN's footage, Cheney was sitting in a tall leather chair, head down, hands folded, eyes closed, gently swaying to and fro. Snoozing while California burned. The VEEP's office said he was meditating. More likely, his natural nocturnal biorhythms prevent his oxygen-deprived brain from functioning during normal waking hours. Vampires are like that, look it up.
In more serious news, the impending US strike against Iran looms larger. Today the US designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps a proliferator of weapons of mass destruction and its elite Qods force a supporter of terrorism. Sound familiar? It's the same rhetoric the Bush Crime Family used to justify it's illegal, bloody invasion of Iraq six years ago. According to Reuters, the useless Secretary of State Condoleeza Valdeez said: "Today, Secretary Paulson and I are announcing several new steps to increase the costs to Iran of its irresponsible behavior. . . . If Iran's rulers choose to continue down a path of confrontation, the United States will act with the international community to resist these threats."
Then she scurried away, entourage in tow, toward the nearest Ferrangmo's store.
We'll discuss these - and all other important news stories - on the program tonight!

Also odd how FEMA was damn sure ready and off to actions here in FloorREEduh for the 4 hurricanes of 2004 (again, thanks global warming!) as well as Wilma in 2005. I'm sure the fact that "President" BU$Hitler's prickboy brother Jebthro being our governor has NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT NOW DID IT? Why not just have FEMA come out and say "Oh but fuck Louisiana cuz they have a goddamn DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR and fuck New Orleans cuz they have a goddamn DEMOCRATIC MAYOR...and ya notice he's urm, you know, BLACK!" Another Friday, another news dump. Today Florida Senator and former Bush Cabinet member Mel Martinez became the latest defector to jump off the sinking Bush Crime Family ship. Mel decided to resign his position as Chairman of the GOP, stating: " It was my goal as general chairman to lead the party as it established the structure and raised the resources necessary to support our presidential candidate and ensure Republican victories next November. I believe we have accomplished those goals. I believe that our future as a party and nation is bright and I have every intention of continuing to fight for our president, our party, and our candidates. "
Yeah, the GOP's future is so bright you gotta quit to salvage any hope of being reelected three years from now. Guess you skipped those college courses in logic, eh Mel?
In non-related Washington news, That grat defender of human rights President Chucklenutz issued new sanctions against Burma's government for its repression of the pro-democracy opposition and protestors. Makes you wonder when he's gonna get tough on the Saudis for doing the exact same thing. Oh we have big oil arrangements there, don't we? Nevermind . . .
Over in the Senate, wanna-be Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey refused to define certain interrogation techniques widely used by the U.S. government as torture, all the while condemning torture or abuse of detainees in any form. The L.A. Times reports: "In a testy final day of questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mukasey drew the wrath of some Democrats on the panel when he refused to say whether he believed that so-called waterboarding, a technique that simulates drowning, constitutes torture that is prohibited by the Constitution."
"I don't know what's involved in the technique," Mukasey said in an exchange with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island. "If waterboarding is torture, torture is not constitutional."
Said Whitehouse: "That's a massive hedge. I mean, it either is or it isn't." He gave a brief description of the practice, but Mukasey still declined to offer an opinion as to its lawfulness."
Great, just what we need, another Attorney General with vague torture definitions and feigned ignorance of the details of interrogation techniques.
We'll discuss these issues, a weekly round up of the news, your phone calls and much more on the program tonight!

WEEK IN REVIEW:
S-CHIP:
The House failed to override Bush's SCHIP veto.
Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA) was more than a little upset after the SCHIP veto override failed. He said, "You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement." Listen to Pete Stark’s comments made on the floor yesterday.
Though the override of Bush’s SCHIP veto failed yesterday, Speaker Pelosi said that a new bill would be drawn with minor changes.
No Child Left Alone: 2-year-old S-CHIP recipient Bethany Wilkerson is new target of right-wingers.
Mitch McConnell’s staff DID write emails interested in smearing the Frosts, and then lied about doing so.
WIRETAPPING:
The Senate Intelligence Committee voted 13-2 to approve compromise legislation that tightens the rules for spying. If passed, the bill would also give immunity to the telecom companies who took part in the warrantless wiretapping after 2001.
Chris Dodd said he will block a vote on the bill because of the provision granting immunity to the telecom companies.
Dick Durbin will not grant blanket immunity to telecoms either.
Arlen Specter says he doesn't know what they have done, so why would we give them immunity?
Glenn Greenwald wrote: AT&T, Other Telecoms, buy victory in lawsuits.
Here's the Federal Court's ruling striking down AT & T's claim that they can engage in warrantless wiretaps for National Security purposes. The case now goes to the Appeals Court who will most likely uphold the lower court decision that says basically 'GET A FREAKIN WARRANT!"
The House put off voting on an eavesdropping bill after Republicans tried to kill the bill by attaching an amendment implying that Democrats want to "prohibit surveillance against Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda and any other foreign intelligence organization."
Verizon admits participating in the illegal spy program.
Qwest lost some big government contracts after they refused to cooperate with "improper government requests" in February 2001.
FEAR MONGERING:
Bush raised the specter of World War III. Actually, the fact that Bush is president raises the specter of World War III.
Another new low for Bush: His approval rating is down to 24%.
Despite his low approval rating Bush claimed that he is still relevant.
LIMBAUGH:
Limbaugh once threatened a journalist after finding out the journalist was going to do an unflattering cover story on him. Limbaugh said, “"We'll find out where your kids go to school, how you paid for your house, where you drink".
WAR ON TERROR:
As reported on Monday: Al-Qaeda In Iraq Crippled!
As reported on Monday: Iraqi National Security Adviser Mowaffak Al-Rubaie told Dick Cheney that Iraq does not want permanent US military bases in Iraq. That’s a “BIG FAT NO”!
Turkey’s parliament approved a plan that would allow their troops to cross into northern Iraq. Word to the Turks: our Congress did something similar, and now there are a lot of regrets.
Robert Gates said that as far as Iran goes, all options are on the table.

THE ’08 CANDIDATES:
Evangelicals are unhappy with the slate of GOP presidential candidates, saying “Nobody has rung the bell yet.” GOP contenders will try to woo the Evangelic, Catholic and Christian voters at a conference this weekend.
Sam Brownback is expected to drop out of ’08 presidential race.
Gore says he has no intention for running for president.
MUKASAY CONFIRMATION:
During confirmation hearings, Michael Mukasay managed to avoid the phrase “I don’t recall.”
During his 2nd day of confirmation hearings, Mukasay hedged regarding torture techniques.

Newsweek’s Oct. 15, 2007 issue:
The colonel was furious. “Can you believe it? They actually drew their weapons on U.S. soldiers.” He was describing a 2006 car accident, in which an SUV full of Blackwater operatives had crashed into a U.S. Army Humvee on a street in Baghdad’s Green Zone. The colonel, who was involved in a follow-up investigation and spoke on the condition he not be named, said the Blackwater guards disarmed the U.S. Army soldiers and made them lie on the ground at gunpoint until they could disentangle the SUV. His account was confirmed by the head of another private security company. Asked to address this and other allegations in this story, Blackwater spokesperson Anne Tyrrell said, “This type of gossip has led to many soap operas in the press.” Read more…
As if being trapped in the middle of a bloody civil war by their civilian leadership hasn’t been humiliating enough for our troops, we find out they also have to protect themselves from high-paid thugs from Blackwater — in the Green Zone, no less. I wonder if Crayzie Shayzie will still hold the same unbridled passion for these guys after learning of this hackery? Oh, and Mr. Romney you STILL have Blackwater’s Vice Chairman on your campaign payroll — how’s that working out for you?

Liberty City group sought military gear, FBI 'al-Qaida' informant says
- By Curt Anderson |The Associated Press
- 1:56 PM EDT, October 11, 2007
MIAMI - An FBI informant who posed as an al-Qaida operative testified Thursday that the alleged ringleader of a budding terrorism cell provided a detailed list of gear the group wanted, including machine guns, bulletproof vests, sport utility vehicles, motorcycles and $50,000 in cash.
Elie Assad -- known as Mohammed to the group -- also said Narseal Batiste sought dynamite to destroy the 110-story Sears Tower in Chicago and ignite a wider anti-government insurrection led by his own troops.
``He told me he was a professional, and he knows how to build buildings, and he knows how to take them down,'' Assad testified in the trial of Batiste and his six alleged followers.
The so-called Liberty City Seven face up to 70 years in prison if convicted of charges that include conspiracy to levy war against the U.S. and provide material support to al-Qaida. Their trial is expected to last up to two more months.
Attorneys for Batiste and the others have said they never intended to mount a terrorist attack and that they went along with the FBI informants only to attempt to extort money from them.
Assad's testimony marked the first public appearance by the key prosecution witness in the case. Assad recorded numerous meetings and phone calls with Batiste and others in the group, and administered an oath of allegiance to al-Qaida to each of the seven defendants that was videotaped by the FBI.
Assad described himself as a Lebanese national of Syrian descent who speaks six languages. He said he was enlisted by the FBI to act as an al-Qaida emissary after agents were tipped in fall 2005 that Batiste was allegedly plotting a terrorist attack on U.S. soil.
At a meeting on Dec. 29, 2005, Assad testified that Batiste gave him a handwritten, three-page list of requested supplies including the weaponry, $50,000 in cash, binoculars, dirt bikes, street motorcycles, SUVs and two large recreational vehicles capable of holding his entire group.
Batiste also told Assad he had access to private land in Louisiana and Alabama, where he hoped to use these supplies to train his ``soldiers'' there so they could mount a guerrilla war to be triggered by the toppling of the Sears Tower.
``I'm really serious about everything I told you,'' Batiste said in one recorded conversation. ``There's only one government -- and that's the government of Islam.''
Assad said he gave the list to the FBI and ultimately supplied only military-style boots and a cell phone to Batiste. ``It's not safe to give him machine guns,'' Assad said.
Prosecutors also played a recording of a Jan. 28, 2006 meeting of Assad, the other informant and Batiste in the Florida Keys. The two informants had been unexpectedly driven there from Miami amid increasing suspicions among Batiste's group that they might be working for the FBI, prosecutors said.
During the meeting, held in a tent in the town of Islamorada, Batiste notes that the Bush administration has become increasingly concerned about homegrown terrorist cells and that ``it would have been easy'' for Assad to have recorded their previous talks -- which, in fact, he did.
``You've got to understand, in this country right now, right now, there are spies everywhere,'' Batiste said on the recording.
Ultimately, Assad assured Batiste that he was a legitimate al-Qaida representative and the two informants were driven back to Miami unharmed. They were able to record the entire trip for the FBI.

Report: Russia Evacuates Entire NUKE PLANT Staff!!!

Report: Russia Evacuates Entire Bushehr Staff
Iranian news outlet claims nuclear experts packed their bags Friday, increasing speculation of imminent U.S., Israeli attack
| Paul Joseph Watson Iranian and Israeli news outlets are reporting that Russia has evacuated its entire staff of nuclear engineers and experts who were working at the Bushehr nuclear reactor, increasing speculation that the United States is preparing an imminent military attack on Iran. According to the Khorramshar News Agency, which represents ethnic Arabs in opposition to Ahmadinejad's regime who live near the reactor, the Russians packed their bags and left on Friday. DEBKAfile offers three different scenarios to explain the sudden withdrawal of the experts.
Iranian and Israeli news outlets are reporting that Russia has evacuated its entire staff of nuclear engineers and experts who were working at the Bushehr nuclear reactor, increasing speculation that the United States is preparing an imminent military attack on Iran. According to the Khorramshar News Agency, which represents ethnic Arabs in opposition to Ahmadinejad's regime who live near the reactor, the Russians packed their bags and left on Friday. DEBKAfile offers three different scenarios to explain the sudden withdrawal of the experts. a) Russian-Iranian negotiations about how work will proceed on Bushehr have again hit a roadblock. This is highly unlikely because Vladimir Putin is set to visit Iran later in the month to sign a set of nuclear accords. b) The Russians have learned that an Iranian attack against American interests in the Persian Gulf or Israel is imminent. This is extremely doubtful because any preemptive Iranian attack would give Israel and the U.S. the pretext they are desperately searching for to launch a devastating bombing campaign. c) Moscow or Tehran have been tipped off that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities is imminent and the Russians are getting their people out of harm's way. This seems to be the most plausible scenario, especially since reports emerged Friday from numerous "unnamed" worldwide intelligence sources that military action is just around the corner. With every passing week, war rhetoric and maneuvering escalates as an assault on Iran seems all but inevitable. This past weekend, Former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said there was no alternative to a military option and that plans should be enacted for a "limited strike against their nuclear facilities." Veteran newsman Seymour Hersh reports that the Bush administration has switched targets from Iran's nuclear facilities to instead target the Revolutionary Guard in a series of planned "surgical" air strikes. "During a video conference over the summer, Bush allegedly told Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador to Iraq, that he was considering striking Iranian targets across the border and that the British "were on board," reports AFP. |
