David Rice Atchison attended a Presbyterian University, and was expected by his parents to enter the ministry. However, he chose a career on law.President for a Day
He is probably most famous for being the President Pro Tem of the Senate on Sunday, March 4, 1849. On that date James Polk's term of office expired at noon; his successor, Zachary Taylor, refused to be sworn in on the Sabbath. With no official president or vice-president, some consider Atchison to have been "President for a Day", but he is not included in the official list of presidents (now standing at 44).
