First, Tice's description of the program confirms everything we have surmised about the program. The program:
- Established the means to collect all American communications
- Analyzed meta-data to select a smaller subset of communications to tap further
- Conducted human analysis of those messages
That is, the Bush administration used meta-data (things like length of phone call that have nothing to do with terrorism) to pick which communications to actually open and read, and then they opened and read them.
And of course, everyone's communications--everyone's--were included in the totality of communications that might be tapped.
Including--especially--journalists. We knew that both Christiane Amanpour and Lawrence Wright's communications were tapped. Well, apparently so were every other journalists'.

Former NSA Analyst: NSA ‘Monitored All Communications’ Of Americans, Targeted Journalists»
Last night on MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” former analyst for the National Security Agency Russell Tice revealed that the NSA had collected “monitored all communications” of Americans and specifically targeted journalists.
TICE: The National Security Agency had access to all Americans’ communications — faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications. And it didn’t matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and you never made any foreign communications at all. They monitored all communications. […] But an organization that was collected on were U.S. news organizations and reporters and journalists.
OLBERMANN: To what purpose? I mean, is there a file somewhere full of every e-mail sent by all the reporters at the “New York Times?” Is there a recording somewhere of every conversation I had with my little nephew in upstate New York? Is it like that?
TICE: If it was involved in this specific avenue of collection, it would be everything. Yes. It would be everything.
Tice, a major whistleblower who helped reveal President Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program to the New York Times in 2005, also told Olbermann that the agency sought specifically “to be deceptive” to prevent congressional committees to learn more about the program, calling it “a shell game”:
TICE: The agency would tailor some of their briefings to try to be deceptive for — whether it be, you know, a congressional committee or someone they really didn’t want to know exactly what was going on. So there would be a lot of bells and whistles in a briefing, and quite often, you know, the meat of the briefing was deceptive.

In October, two other whistleblowers told ABC News that the NSA “routinely” listened in on Americans’ phone calls and agents would often share “salacious or tantalizing” intercepted calls with each other. All this despite Bush’s frequent protestations that his illegal wiretaping program was “limited,” that it targeted only “a phone call of an al Qaeda, known al Qaeda suspect,” and that he ensured “that our civil liberties of our citizens are treated with respect.”
To the end, Bush and Cheney defended the program. In his final days in office, Cheney declared that “it always aggravated” him that the Times won a Pulitzer for exposing his administration’s illegal spying program.
Update: Keith Olbermann will interview Tice again on his program tonight, airing on MSNBC at 8 pm EST. ThinkProgress.ORG is interested to know whether Tice ever experienced political interference while working for the agency. What questions do you have?

Friends,
This happy, happy day!
We have made it through the Dark Ages and here we are, in one of the most redemptive moments history has ever witnessed. Barack Obama is our best hope to get it right, to heal our national soul, to reach out to the rest of the world with an olive branch instead of shocking brutality.
I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who has worked to make this day happen. For many, the madness goes back, not eight years but twenty-eight years, to the tragic day Reagan was sworn in to dismantle our precious "government of the people" and our beloved way of life.
To all of you who have spoken up and spoken out, who have written letters and marched for peace, for all of you who never gave up, you are the true heroes today. Many of you have suffered great economic losses. Some of you have endured a loved one being shipped overseas to senseless and shameful wars, and thousands of you have seen those loved ones returned home, no longer alive. It has been a heartbreaking time.
But the sun comes out at noon today. The disgraced outgoing president will slide out the side door and head to Crawford to sell the Hollywood set known as the Bush "ranch" before he settles down in an exclusive neighborhood in Dallas. I would encourage Mr. Bush to issue one final pardon before noon today -- his own. He had better issue a blanket pardon for all crimes that may have been committed since 2001 by himself, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the whole gang. Serious laws were broken, a war was concocted on a lie, and now, please, justice must be carried out.
So let us move forward and fix the horrible mess we are in. We are fortunate to have a new president who is smart and kind and committed to serving his country. Take a moment today and think about what you can do to join him in helping him do his job. We're all in this together. Our country has been so profoundly wrecked by an administration who decided to mug our constitution and then steal what they can for their Wall Street cronies on the way out the door.
Here is my plea: Let's not leave Barack Obama alone to clean up the mess. As he takes his oath today, please take one yourself -- to work harder than ever to end these wars, create universal health care, save our planet, end poverty, increase knowledge and establish a true government "of, by and for the people" (instead of "of, by and for the lobbyists, the bankers, and the war profiteers").
On a personal note, it's no secret that I have had to suffer an avalanche of hate and attack as I stuck my neck out to simply do my job. Some day I will tell you what the true cost of this has been for me, but not today. Today is a time for celebration and optimism and hope. I'm glad we all lived to see this incredible moment. And I thank each of you for your support of my work and your dedication to our democracy.

Yes the Democrats give us hope by the mere fact that they are NOT neo-KKKon Republicans, but remember that they have been a seated majority for TWO FUCKING YEARS and gave BU$Hitler everything he demanded...including a trillion dollars for his comrades.
I am hoping that one day soon a majority of Americans will end their denial that WE are the Government, that we are responsible to make sure these people who serve us do their damn jobs. Unfortunately I believe it will take a few years of soup lines for that to happen, but it can happen. And probably WILL thanks to the last 28 YEARS of Con policies. A lesson we were taught but have not fully learned yet is that we can not hand our responsibility over to these people and expect them to do what is right. We need to hire and fire, make them actually show up for work and tow the line. They answer to us, and while we are asleep they are robbing us of everything...at the very least, a lot were actively partaking.
The Founders did not intend service as a Representative of a State to be an occupation or lifetime career, but that is what happened. Which is why we NEED term limits! I would make a suggestion that before any young person is given the right to cast a vote, they read a book of writings by some great Patriots like Patrick Henry, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain and Will Rodgers. If we do NOT do our job, we can NOT expect them to do theirs. Democracy DOES NOT begin and end when you get off your ass to vote for President every 4 years. DEMOCRACY BEGINS WITH YOU, TAG! YOU'RE IT!

Face The Fact: Israel Is OUT OF CONTROL
We fund these people....why? They can't exist on their own? Seems to me Israel is sucking us DRY when we can't pay our OWN bills.... Franken certified winner of Senate race; Coleman vows lawsuit

It's official: the Minnesota canvassing board has certified Al Franken as the winner of November's U.S. Senate election in the great state of Minnesota. Nonetheless, despite having virtually no chance of victory, Norm Coleman is vowing to file suit in an attempt to drag out the process of Senator-elect Franken's victory.
Now is a good time to remember what Norm Coleman said about this exact situation two long months ago:
"Yesterday the voters spoke. We prevailed," Coleman said Wednesday at a news conference. He noted Franken could opt to waive the recount.
"It's up to him whether such a step is worth the tax dollars it will take to conduct," Coleman said, telling reporters he would "step back" if he were in Franken's position.
The key difference between Franken and Coleman: Franken won, and he did it without a cherry-picking legal strategy. At this point, Coleman is a sure loser, his only flicker of a hope is dependent on the success of a "count my votes, but not his" legal strategy that is doomed to failure.

"They're reining in their plans for new centers for now. It's probably 50-50 population growth and the economy."

"I do not see any way we can afford to wait until March to deal with a potential $1-billion-plus shortfall in this budget year," Sink, the state's only elected Democratic executive, said in an interview later. "That's just an impossible situation."
Either the governor or the two leaders of the Legislature call special sessions, and so far Gov. Charlie Crist and new leaders of the House and Senate, all Republicans, are taking a wait-and-see approach. And Sink's criticism comes as Crist is reaching the midpoint of his term.
